Welcome to the Linking Courses Home!

What is this website about?

home.jpgResearch in mathematics education has identified the crucial role that mathematical content knowledge plays in the professional development of teachers (Shulman, 1986; Hill and Ball, 2004). However, pre-service teachers enrolled in undergraduate mathematics educationprograms often question why they are required to take upper-level college mathematics classes as part of their teacher education programs. Indiana University’s mathematics education program is at the leading edge of resolving the discord between students’perceptions of their content needs and students’ content needs as identified by research.

Over the past two years, the secondary mathematics education program at IU has been developing one-hour, pass/fail “linking courses” (M302), designed to link topics and theory from college mathematics courses to the high school curriculum. So far, we have developed four M302 courses: Algebra throughout the Curriculum, Modeling throughout the Curriculum, Probability and Statistics throughout the Curriculum, and Calculus throughout the Curriculum. Each course corresponds to one or two courses taught by the mathematics department and required by the School of Education’s secondary mathematics education program. For example, M302: Algebra throughout the Curriculum corresponds to the Linear Algebra and Modern Algebra courses that every secondary mathematics education student takes as part of her program, usually during her junior or senior year.

The Linking Course website is developed for Secondary Education students and high school math teachers to share teacher usable products on the Internet. The products might include mathematical book reviews, mathematical tasks and lesson plans approprieate for use in seondary schools, explorations of theory behind secondary school mathematics topics and recreational mathematics topics that may be of interest to secondary school students and teachers. Plus, there are links pages on the website that are a collection of all sorts of mathematical resources.

What you can do at this website

Visitors of this website can explore the various themes within each course. For example, “Making Matrices Meaningful” is a theme in the Algebra course. Each theme contains products (tasks, lessons, and book reviews) that develop the theme across grades 7 through 12. Visitors can also search for individual products with advanced search features such as Indiana Standards and NCTM Standards. Choose "Products" from the top menu to begin.
